Socrates Cafes are free, open dialogues. Usually, the topic is chosen at the start of each session, and the purpose is not to debate or reach an agreement, but to explore together what we think about various general principles or concepts that can be explored through dialogue.

Those of us who attend regularly find the dialogue sharpens our listening and speaking skills, and is very valuable in improving our critical thinking ability. It is very casual, and everyone is very welcome.

According to Nobel Prize winning economist Edmund Phelps the lack of dynamism and vitalism that had previously driven the economic growth of the USA started a sharp decline in the late 60s and early 70s. We will be changing the format of our LoDo Denver IDEA Cafe Startup Workshop each Friday in February until we get it right! :-)  Also, we've changed the meeting time from 4:30 to 2 p.m.

Why the change? We are creating a meeting that turns every weekend into a startup weekend. Or possibly every month into a startup month. Or every year into a startup year. One of the things that we will try to decide during our Friday LoDo Denver IDEA Cafe Startup Workshops in February and conversation with members and others between meetings.

Join us this afternoon, Friday, February 10, or next Friday to help us make the changes in the IDEA Cafe format, and to brainstorm any problem or opportunity concerning your startup in a new career, new project or campaign, or new business.

One Day at a Time

The conventional wisdom is that a formal business plan improves the results of a startup or small business. There is no valid evidence to support that lie. For more see the book "Just Start", Harvard Business Review Press. 

Experiments Instead of Plans.

I pointed out decades ago formal business plans kill new businesses. 

What do successful startups do instead? 

Rather than say they "experiment" with prospects I use the more common term "selling." 

Successful business start by selling. The best thing to do to start a new business is to sell something to someone. 

Selling is pay as you go market research, and it is much more accurate than a research interview. The question "would you buy this if we had it" and "will you give me a check for this now" are entirely different questions.

Happy Ben Franklin's Birthday! American Hero!

Many people think Franklin was US President, he would have easily been elected even though very much too old by the time Washington took office. So he doesn't get recognized on President's Day.

I'd like to see his birthday (today, born January 17, 1706) and Martin Luther King's birthday combined into a two day celebration if America's Hero's,  with 4 new members elected by registered voters at each general election.

Every major sport has a hall of fame, celebrities and entertainers have all kinds of ways to be recognized, but what about the citizen like Franklin who never was President but made every other President possible, likely we would not have a country today if not for him.
