This is a firemark, a symbol tacked on the front of houses that were paying their fair share, assured that the local fire department would do their duty.

Today fire protection is a universal government service. No so in Ben Franklin's Philadelphia.

Franklin's birthday is January 17. We are finalizing plans for a celebration here in Denver, probably a lunch.

If you'd like an invitation, RSVP at Bring your own firemark. :)
