Business in One Lesson.

What is the lesson?

Fred Beisser:   Pilot ejecting from a U.S. Air Force Thunderbird Flying Team F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft at Mountain Home AFB. One has to know when to pull the plug and get out; similar to recognizing a failing business.

Here's the same lesson in song:

Turning data into dollars.

College professor lecture: What is Entrepreneurship? DANGER!

John Wren's comment on this video's YouTube station:

WARNING: This short lecture is very much in line with what is taught in college classrooms across the country now, the startup approach first promoted by the Small Business Administration in 1953 and repeated by them ever since.

Problem is, it is not the way new businesses actually start. If it was the wealth of nations would benefit more from a planned economy that a market economy, lots of data to prove this just is not the case.

For a more helpful way to think about start up see Amar Bhide's The Origin and Evolution of New Businesses, , Oxford University Press. Bhide's book provided the uncited theoretical underpinnings for the very practical and useful Harvard Business Review Press's book a few years back Just Start by Len Schlesinger and Charlie Kiefer.

Startup Show: Action Class in Practical Politics

Hyper-local Neighborhood Caucus Clubs Being Organized.

(PLEASE FORWARD. THANKS! John)

From: Save the Caucus.

Contact: John Wren, cell (720)495-4949

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 20, 2016

Hyper-local Neighborhood Caucus Clubs Being Organized.
“Fresh leadership is always needed in both major political parties, so we will help them both.”

Denver—Save the Caucus, a Colorado political committee formed this year to fight what has become Propositions 107 and 108, today announced a project for hyper-local civic education to increase informed participation in the Colorado Caucus in 2018. www.Meetup.com/Caucus-Clubs (303)861-1447

Making the announcement long-time community activist John Wren said, "Hyper-local neighborhood Caucus Clubs will be promoted through Nextdoor.com and local community newspapers. Caucus Clubs will welcome new neighbors and invite everyone in the neighborhood to social events and educational activities in the neighborhood, in cooperation with local chambers, local community newspapers, service clubs, etc.

"Caucus Clubs will not take political positions, except on legislation that effects the Colorado Caucus, nor will we endorse candidates or issues. Like the Denver City Club (I'm a former member and past President) our purpose will be 'to inform not reform.' We will cooperate with everyone interested in strengthening the grassroots in business and politics, and we will inform newcomers of their precinct committee people for both major political parties and we will give them subscription information for local publications and performing arts groups," said Wren

"We are going to need a lot of help to make this happen. Anyone who'd like to be a part of it is encouraged to check out the Caucus Clubs link on www.COCaucus.org or www.SmallBizChamber.org or go directly to www.Meetup.com/Caucus-Clubs. Those who like the idea are asked to Tweet us @IDEACafe or @BuildBetterCO."

###

Save the Caucus is a Colorado political committee. 1881 Buchtel Blvd. #501, Denver, CO 80210 (303)861-1447 www.COCaucus.org John Wren is the registered agent. He co-founded the 2002 Save the Caucus which defeated the Caucus-killer Amendment 29 60% 40%  despite being outspent 1400 to 1.

Politics and business? Unaffiliated?

When asked "who do you like for President," True-Unaffiliated voters say, "there is a reason it is a secret ballot. I don't ask, and I don't tell."

And after the election, they try to help whoever is elected. It's not only good for business. It's good for our country.

True-Unaffiliated voters say "No" to Colorado Caucus killing Propositions 107 and 108. They know it helps their neighbors who are active Republicans or Democrats control their party leaders and to vet candidates so that, unlike this year, the best possible candidates from both major parties end up on the general election ballot.

Save the Caucus, a Colorado political committee, www.COCaucus.org, John Wren and Scott Shires registered agents, urge you to vote no on Propositions 107 and 108. If you'd like to express your opposition it could make a big difference in defeating the multi-million dollar, misleading campaign of the powerful forces pushing these mistaken measures from the shadows.

To get out of a deep hole, first stop digging.

Beware of bad advice.

The problem with successful people is they very often forget what they did to become successful, especially entrepreneurs when they talk about how they started their business.

Many, many successful business owners will say it is important that the potential new business do lots of market research, lots of careful planning, and get people to agree that the business idea is sound. Well intentioned, this advice is informed by what the owner has heard from the Small Business Administration and it's many offshoots. Since 1953 the venture capital model for startup,  market research and a written business plan, has become the conventional wisdom.

The problem is, that is just not how most successful businesses got off the ground. If it was we'd be a planned economy and not a market economy.

How do successful businesses start? Check out my little book on Amazon (click here.)

The Kindle edition is just 99-cents, I'll give you $1 back if you buy it and don't find it helpful.

Don't miss the Startup Show this Friday. Topic: Grit

Angela Duckworth's new book Grit is just out, expect to see it on the best seller list soon. Well written, interesting, informative, very helpful if you want to get Grit!

A student of Martin Seiligman, the father of Positive Psychology, she looks at the aspect of a person that is the best predictor of success, "Grit."

Our culture focuses on talent and natural ability, but it turns out effort is much more important. That effort comes from four character traits that can be enhanced.

We'll talk about this new book Friday, you can watch on YouTube Live Events, Google+ Hangouts on the Air, or via a link that will posted right here before the show.

Mark your calendar now, this Friday, noon Mountain Daylight Time, and take a look at the book right now on Amazon (click) I ordered the Kindle edition and got one of the first copies yesterday.

If you'd like to be a guest on the Startup Show some Friday to talk about your startup experience call me and let's talk. See you Friday!

Do we still need salesmen?

Good topic for an upcoming Socrates Cafe @ DU, join us this Saturday or next? http://Meetup.com/Small-Biz-Chamber  "Imagine, Think, Sell, Learn!"

"I Am A Salesman. I Built America."
Author Unknown, as quoted by Zig Ziglar:
I am proud to be a salesman, because more than any other man, I and millions of others like me, built America.
The man who builds a better mouse trap — or a better anything — would starve to death if he waited for people to beat a pathway to his door. Regardless of how good or how needed the product or service might be, it has to be sold.
Eli Whitney was laughed at when he showed his cotton gin. Edison had to install his electric light free of charge in an office building before anyone would even look at it. The first sewing machine was smashed to pieces by a Boston mob. People scoffed at the idea of railroads. They thought that traveling even thirty miles an hour would stop the circulation of the blood! McCormick strives for 14 years to get people to use his reaper. Westinghouse was considered a fool for stating he could stop a train with wind. Morse had to plead before 10 Congresses before they would even look at his telegraph.
The public didn't go around demanding these things; they had to be sold!!
They needed thousands of salesmen, trailblazers and pioneers - people who could persuade with the same effectiveness as the inventor could invent. Salesmen took these inventions, sold the public on what these products could do, taught customers how to use them, and then taught businessmen how to make a profit from them.
As a salesman, I've done more to make America what it is today than any other person you know. I was just as vital in your great-great-grandfather's day as I am in yours, and I will be just as vital in your great-great-grandson's day. I have educated more people, created more jobs, taken more drudgery from the laborer's work, given more profits to businessmen, and have given more people a fuller and richer life than anyone in history. I've dragged prices down, pushed quality up, and made it possible for you to enjoy the comforts and luxuries of automobiles, radios, electric refrigerators, televisions, and air conditioned homes and buildings. I've healed the sick, given security to the aged, and put thousands of young men and women through college. I've made it possible for inventors to invent, for factories to hum, and for ships to sail the seven seas.
How much money you find in your pay envelope next week, and whether in the future you will enjoy the luxuries of prefabricated homes, stratospheric flying of airplanes, and new world of jet propulsion and atomic power, depends on me. The loaf of bread you bought today was on a baker's shelf because I made sure that a farmer's wheat got to a mill, that the mill made wheat into flour, and that the flour was delivered to your baker.
Without me, the wheels of industry would come to a grinding halt. And with that, jobs, marriages, politics and freedom of thought would be a thing of the past. I AM A SALESMAN and I'm proud and grateful that as such, I serve my family, my fellow man and my country.
From Zig Ziglar, The Secrets of Closing Sales. Thanks Zig, RIP. We'll see you at the top!

(As I posted this made a decision to add "Sell" to our SBCC Startup Method Practices. We will be testing over the next few weeks with a new Franklin Circle, if you'd like an invitation to our 1st meeting (it's free) call me. John Wren 303-861-1447)

Big change to be announced next Thursday!

(This is being delayed for at least a week as John Wren focuses most of his efforts right now on starting Save the Caucus. For more about it see Colorado Caucus News http://Facebook.com/Colorado.Caucus.News. Questions? Call John at (303)861-1447.)

We are going to focus on hyper-local neighborhood groups to help restore the dynamism and vitalism that until recently were the hallmarks of the US economy.

The neighborhood efforts will go under the umbrella of Caucus & Commerce Clubs.

To help people who want to start a new Caucus and Commerce Club in their neighborhood and others who are starting in a new direction with their work, a 90-minute meeting built on the foundation of our IDEA Cafe Startup Workshop will be held frequently, both online and face to face. First one is tomorrow, Saturday, February 13.

These startup meetings are free and open to everyone (contributions gratefully accepted, but please no more than $20.) We will also ask members to pay a very small contribution via Meetup.com, but there is a 180 day trial period, even for those who have been with us in the past.

RSVP "No" and you'll be invited to future session around Colorado and online. For more about tomorrows meeting see http://Meetup.com/Small-Biz-Chamber or call John Wren at (303)861-1447

Watch for announcement to the media next Thursday.

JohnWren.com +Recover+Start+Grow+Flourish+: Startup Show-- Today on Contemplative Imagination ...

JohnWren.com +Recover+Start+Grow+Flourish+: Startup Show-- Today on Contemplative Imagination ...: CORRECTION: Startup Show will now be on at 12:30 p.m. each day instead of 12:15 as originally announced. Sorry if that cause you a problem. ...

An announcement in celebration of MLK.

Today I'm making an annoncement about a chage I'm suggesting we make on the way we celebrate Martin Luther King Day given the pantheon of American Heros who devoted there lives to give us our freedom, starting with Benjamin Franklin who's birthday yesterday and every January 17 is celebrated more by the breach than the observance as Shakespeare put it about another hero long, long ago.

I've also decided to make this announcement about the SBCC and the Startup Show:

Today 1st Monday of daily version of the Startup Show, changing the time of the half hour show to 12:15 pm Mountain.

The focus will be on the Good News for tomorrow, the Good News in work, family, neighborhoods, communities, and nations.

I believe there is hope for Good News tomorrow because of the research I've been inspired to do over the last 20+ years that has resulted in the discovery of what I'm now calling the SBCC Spiritual Startup Method's 4 Practices: Faith, Imagination, Thinking, and Life-long Learning.

Today on the Startup Show-the practice of Imagination.

We'll also talk about this at Root & Branch discussion meeting this afternoon, open to anyone who is interested in a spiritual way of living.

For more about the show and the meeting see http://Meetup.com/Small-Biz-Chamber

Next week we will begin having guests on the Startup Show each day.

If you'd like to be on the show to share your startup experience, or if you have a suggestion for who we should invite, call me on the Startup Line, (303)861-1447.

Happy 310th birthday Ben Franklin!

Ben Franklin 1706- 1798 Icon by Mike, see link to his web page at the bottom of this page. Thanks Mike!

True-thinking.

There is true-thinking, some call it being awake, then there is ism-thinking, close minded, playing a pat hand, only attracted to reinforcement of preconceived conclusions, true believers on the left and right who have substituted political beliefs for belief in a higher power.

Belief in a higher power means belief in one's own spiritual experience with or without being an active member of an organized religion.

Free spirits who are totally outside any structure are choosing what is for most of us a more dangerous path, for more see Ronald Rolheiser's The Holy Longing.

Or join us tomorrow (or any Monday) here in Denver for Root & Branch, free open discussion meeting about the spiritual path of the 12-steps and meditation.

For more see Root & Branch http://Meetup.com/Small-Biz-Chamber
